Your Weekend Wow!

(Tomorrow I will be at the Somewhere In Time – Unlimited sewing circle for most of the day, so Your Weekend Wow comes a bit early. PS – Media Meltdown continues. I may have to fire myself.)

Wedding bodice, 1896. Silk taffeta, silk satin, tulle, silk floss, silver mesh, rhinestone, pearl, silver cording. Weeks, Chicago. Gift of Mrs. C. Phillip Miller and Mrs. Albert F. Madlener, Jr. 1975.24.1a.

Worn as part of wedding ensemble by the donor’s mother (née Florence Sanger Pullman, b. 8/11/1868, d. 6/5/1937) on April 29, 1896 on the occasion of her marriage to Frank Orren Lowden (b. 1/26/1896, d. 3/20/1943). In addition to this outer bodice, the ensemble (1975.24.1a-h) includes an inner bodice, skirt, shoes, stockings, and wreath. The dress arrived at the Chicago Historical Society (later Chicago History Museum) taken apart at major seams; bodice without neckline trimming or sleeves; skirt lining separated from skirt.

    • Actually, it would have been worn over a corset so I’m not sure it would have been very noticeable…if it weren’t for all the 3-dimensional embellishments poking and snagging, that is. 😉
