More Victorian Summer Dresses!

This one is for Deb and everyone else who loves an Early Bustle Era summer dress. I’ve been meaning to post this all week, but things got a little crazy. Better late than never!

  1. Oh wow, this is giving me some ideas of what to do with my sheer cotton voiles. Was thinking about an 1885 bustle but doing them in a different time period might be fun.
    *stealing two of these* 🙂

      • I’ve been inspired by some recent froofy 1850s tiered dresses for this. Probably not Costume College as hoops can be bothersome in a crowded room or classroom.

      • It might be possible to get away with a tiered 1850’s dress at CC. Those tiered ruffles were seen from early in the decade, however corded petticoats didn’t give way to bell-shaped hoops until 1854-55, depending on where you were living, and corded petticoats are much more forgiving in crowded spaces. I’ll put together a selection of early 1850’s dresses with tiered ruffles for your perusal (and enjoyment). 🙂

    • I’ve only seen fabric that looks this semi-sheer and light in one of two choices: polyester (too stiff, shiny, hot and generally nasty) and silk (too traumatic for the pocketbook.) I have seen cottons that are close to this from India, but they often have small slubs (in the manner of dupioni silk) or the prints are way off historically – no lovely, true Victorian florals like these. And I’ve occasionally seen cotton/silk blends in semi-sheer solids, also from India and of a more even weave. If I ever find a reliable source for quality summer-dress goods I will definitely share it!
